An Introduction to Pinterest
Pinterest is an online bookmarking site allows you to pin images or videos, so you can view them later, or share them through your account, with those who follow you on the site. Not only is it a way to connect with individuals who have similar tastes, it’s also a great way to find different images for a particular subject without having to run multiple searches on other search engines.
An Overview of the Site
Pinterest is a visual bookmarking site; it allows users to "pin" images or videos found online on to their virtual pinboard. These uploads can later be viewed, and shared with others onto virtual pinboards. It is similar to sites like Digg, but you are restricted to pinning images and videos to the Pinterest site.
Like other social media sites, people can follow you on Pinterest. And, similar to other social media sites, they can repin images or videos which you have posted, and "like" these images or videos. You can also follow others on the site, and like and comment on their posts, which will be repinned to your homepage on the site as well. Adding a bookmarklet to your toolbar on your browser allows you to instantly pin a video or image you like to your wall.
How to Use it
If you are new to social media, or plan on getting started with Pinterest, the first thing you have to do is register for the site. Upon registering, you are given the option to link to Facebook and Twitter; although you don’t have to, it allows you to easily find and link to your friends who are already on the site.
After you register you’ll be prompted to create a profile. Creating a username will allow others to find you; it will also be the main title for your board, so it works as an indicator for others who want to follow you. If you are on other social media sites, it is a good idea to use the same or similar username, especially if it is a business or blog account. You will also be prompted to check your settings, modify email settings and updates on the site.
To pin images, you can use the pin button; a simple click allows you to add any image, from any site. You can also create new boards, for different image and video categories. You will also be able to upload your own photo you have taken, by clicking the "Add+" button; simply add the URL and the image will upload.
Upon registering, it is an easy process to follow. From adding pins, to following friends, or creating new boards. The site is fairly straightforward, and easy to work.
